A review article by Jorge L. Alio and colleagues entitled “Enhancements after cataract surgery” discusses indications and outcomes following procedures to correct residual refractive error after cataract surgery, including use of the Sulcoflex® lens.

The paper, published in Current Opinions in Ophthalmology, describes the main causes of unsatisfactory visual outcomes after cataract surgery and the current methods used to resolve suboptimal results. The authors note that although LASIK has proved to be the most accurate procedure to correct residual refractive error after cataract surgery...

A recent study by Talita Shimoda and colleagues entitled “Visual Outcomes after Implantation of a Novel Refractive Toric Multifocal Intraocular Lens”,  demonstrates the high efficacy of the M-flex T® multifocal toric IOL in achieving statistically significant visual acuity and refractive improvements as well as high spectacle independence in cataract patients.

In a recent article in the Taiwan Journal of Ophthalmology, Dr Shao-Wei Weng and colleagues highlight the effectiveness and rotational stability of the T-flex® Aspheric Toric lens.

This prospective study of 24 eyes in 24 patients demonstrated the predictable refractive outcomes that can be achieved with the T-flex®, as 96% of patients had a corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of ≥20/40 post-operatively. This equated to a 6 Snellen line mean improvement in CDVA post-operatively compared to the pre-operative assessment.

The October 2014 Issue of the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (JCRS) presents a paper by Mr Vinod Gangwani, MRCOphth, FRCS, using the M-flex T and M-flex with Peripheral Corneal Relaxing Incisions (PCRIs) to correct astigmatism in patients requiring multi-focality.

This randomised, single blind study included patients with bilateral corneal astigmatism of between 1.0 and 2.5 Diopters and demonstrated the advantages of toric IOLs over PCRIs.

In the analysis of 58 eyes with 29 patients, the mean residual refractive astigmatism 3 months after surgery was 0.45 ± 0.49 D (maximum 1.50 D)

The recent Jan Venter (MD, Clinic Director of the Optical Express International Medical Advisory Board) article provides further evidence of the predictability of the Sulcoflex® Aspheric in correcting refractive surprises.

Residual refractive error has a major impact on patient satisfaction, and lens exchange or excimer laser may not be a viable option to correct ametropia in these dissatisfied patients. Dr Venter’s paper provides evidence of the effectiveness of Sulcoflex Aspheric in correcting these refractive surprises in a large cohort of patients (80 eyes in 64 patients).
