An update on Foldable Intraocular Lenses

Posted on 24/03/2001

Following the success of “Update on Foldable Intraocular Lenses”, a one-day Symposium which was held last year in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, Rayner recently sponsored a second one-day Symposium, “Update on Foldable Intraocular Lenses 2002".

The meeting was a huge success, well attended by consultant and junior ophthalmologists coming mainly, but not exclusively, from the North of England.

Co-hosted by Piers Percival (Scarborough) and Helen Seward (Croydon), the faculty also included David Alan (Sunderland), Peter Bacon and Ashok Vyas (Scarborough), Alan Ridgway (Manchester), Milind Pande (Hull) and David Boase (Portsmouth). Special guest was Professor David Apple (Charleston, USA). Although sponsored by Rayner Intraocular Lenses Ltd., both the agenda and choice of faculty members were organised by Piers Percival who skilfully blended the programme to offer an unbiased and balanced overview of the choice of foldable intraocular lenses currently available in the UK.

After being formally welcomed by Donald Munro, Managing Director of Rayner Intraocular Lenses Ltd., delegates were given the case for Centerflex® by Alan Ridgway, the case for silicone by David Boase and the case for hydrophobic acrylics by Helen Seward.

Ashok Vyas discussed the ongoing results from “The Scarborough Study” and together with Piers Percival’s dual presentations on the overall case for hydrophilic lenses and on the excellent refractive and clinical results he and his patients currently enjoy, the case for Centerflex® was well and truly highlighted.

Delegates were treated to excellent presentations by David Allen who discussed his choice of intraocular lens for different situations and by Peter Bacon who discussed current IOL insertion techniques.

Professor Apple’s eagerly anticipated presentation on choice of lens material, the elimination of PCO through enhanced surgical technique and choice of lens design, and details of a new comparative preclinical study for Centerflex® currently underway in the USA was very well received. In Professor Apple’s opinion, Centerflex® has all the hallmarks of a very successful lens, an observation well substantiated by clinical results from the many and growing number of ophthalmologists now routinely implanting Centerflex® both here in the UK and overseas.

Following an enthusiastic question and answer session, the symposium concluded with a meeting for the participating surgeons in an international and multicentre study for Centerflex®. The symposium was approved for six (6) CME points and it is hoped that a similar symposium will take place in the South of England later this, or early next, year.
